A Better You Starts with A Calm Mind

Life can be hard.

Mental health is so important for us to fully function as the talented, smart, good people we are. So, at times, it’s best to create a calming space for your mind to take a break and enjoy that break to the fullest:

1. Light a candle

The first thing I do when I get home from work is light a candle or two. It’s something about the soft light or maybe it’s the flickering flame or the delicious scents. Whatever it may be, I instantly feel calm.

2. Shut off your phone

If you’re like me, you have your work email on your phone and you’ve also learned people don’t stop sending emails as soon as the clock ticks 5 p.m. That doesn’t mean YOU have to answer them. I’m a firm believer of work-life balance, that an employee is his/her best when they’ve had time to rest, and that means having time every day.

So, at 5 p.m., turn your phone off. The work will be there tomorrow but you’ll be fully refreshed to tackle it.

And, yes, you can tell your boss I told you to do this.

3. Watch your favorite TV show, movie

They say a lot of television is a bad thing, but I’ve learned watching something mindlessly entertaining is actually refreshing! Go ahead, watch that latest episode of Game of Thrones, House of Cards or start Stranger Things. Watch a movie that lifts your spirits. After a long day of work, you deserve to watch something you thoroughly enjoy.

4. Take a bath

Don’t just run the warm water. Grab some bath salts, fill the tub to almost-overflowing with bubbles, bring your favorite glass of wine or book. Elevate that bath time so it rivals that of a spa treatment. Paint your nails, use a cleansing mask, shave (I always feel refreshed when I shave my legs), whatever your idea of pampering is, take part in it.

5. Go to sleep

We’re so overstimulated all the time with work, phone calls, house chores, homework, social media and events that we put sleep on the back burner. But it’s so very important to make your pillow your BFF. Make sure you’re getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night. If you had a late night the night before, make sure you go to bed early the following night. There’s a reason they call it beauty sleep because, well, quality sleep makes you your beautiful self.
